Outdoor Writing Workshop with Marilyn Johnston

This course is an intensive afternoon of writing designed for youth (age 11 and up) and adventurous adults, regardless of one’s experience in writing. The class is intended to assist in helping to: gain experience writing from multiple prompts involving art and nature, to learn editing techniques as a way of reviewing their own work, and to participate in a final reading of their writings at the Fine Art Friday reception at the Bush Barn Art Center in July (plus a chance to have their final poems displayed in a poetry walk during the Salem Art Fair & Festival, July 21-23).

Drawing - From Line to Color with Julie Jeanseau

This class with be using the Gardens in beautiful Bush Pasture Park as inspiration to draw and create. We will start with a foundation of mark making, moving into line and then will  end class with instruction on using selective color in a drawing. We will be drawing mostly with micron pens that will lead us to embrace non-erasable “mistakes” as marks of beauty and possibility for our drawings.

Plein Air Painting with Cynthia Herron

Join us at the gardens outside the Bush Barn Art Center for an afternoon of plein air (outdoor) painting. Cynthia Herron will outline some methods for capturing what you see in terms    of drawing, composition, color and value using your oils or acrylics. One painting will be completed, rain or shine. All painting levels welcome.

Introduction to Egg Tempera with Margo McCafferty

One of the world's oldest and most beautiful painting mediums, favored by Byzantine icon painters, as well as by Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Andrew Wyeth, and George Tooker, egg tempera has a uniquely luminous appearance created through the build-up of many transparent layers of pigment tempered with egg yolk. This class is an introduction to the materials and techniques used to create such paintings. Students will learn to mix    paint from dry pigments, and will learn variations on the dry-pigment recipe as well as experiment with commercially available tubed egg tempera paints. They will also have the opportunity to try out a variety of rigid supports, and learn techniques which will allow them to create their own egg tempera paintings.

''Window'' Technique Collage with Glenda Goodrich

Explore the joys of mixed media as you experiment with technique and methods for creating beautiful layered artwork using decorative handmade papers, ephemera and stenciling. You'll add painted areas, leaving open "windows" in your work to reveal the first layer of collaged shapes and images.

Youth Printmaking Workshop with Julie Jeanseau
Monday-Friday, July 10-14 | 9 am-1 pm
Age: 10+

Julie Jeanseau will lead students through a week-long printmaking “survey” covering a range of printmaking practices. Explore collagraphs, gelatin printing, mono printing and relief. Students with an interest in any area of art will enjoy this camp as it will include drawing, painting, carving and construction, all within the foundation of printmaking.
