Across the street is the Old Courthouse, the setting for cases involving slavery, the fur trade and equal rights. Of these cases, the Dred Scott Freedom Trial is the most notable. Tour #2: Our Military Heritage
Friday, September 10, 2010
10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
This itinerary includes a driving tour of Forest Park, seated lunch at Favazza’s on the Hill (or similar), Memorial Service at Jefferson Barracks Memorial Chapel and guided tour at Jefferson Barracks Museum.
Begin your day with a driving tour through the historic Central West End neighborhood, the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Complex and the mansions bordering Forest Park, fine examples of the “Golden Age” of St. Louis at the turn of the century. Forest Park was the site of the 1904 World’s Fair and is one of the largest city parks in the United States. Today, the Park houses the Saint Louis Zoo, the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Missouri History Museum at the Jefferson Memorial, the Science Center and the Muny, among other attractions. An historic driving tour through the park is included.
Next you will visit “The Hill,” the home of St. Louis’ Italian community located in the southwest part of the city. Important as an industrial and residential area since the 1800’s, today it is home to many restaurants, both elegant and casual, ethnic groceries and bakeries, and also entertainment venues including bocce alleys. Favazza’s on the Hill is your lunch destination, family owned and operated and serving up homemade dishes that have been in the family recipe book for years.
Your next stop is the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, the 4th largest cemetery in the nation. More than 100,000 veterans or their dependents, including Union and Confederate soldiers, are buried here. The 5th Cavalry Memorial Service will take place at the Memorial Chapel on the grounds of Jefferson Barracks. After, you will enjoy a private, guided tour at the park’s museum. Take a walk through the history of the Civil War, Spanish-American War and World Wars I and II. Established in 1826 and stretching over 1,702 acres, this military post overlooking the Mississippi River was once the largest in America. Its strategic location helped open the West and protected American interests in the newly-acquired land.
Includes Destination St. Louis tour guide, seated lunch at Favazza’s on the Hill, admission fee to Jefferson Barracks Museum, cooler of chilled bottled water, 47-passenger motorcoach transportation, driver and guide gratuities, on-line/mail/fax pre-registration services and on-site coordination.
