Working from a model, the artist will explore a representational style of figure and portrait painting, with an emphasis on character, composition and color. Traditional oil, water based oil or acrylics may be used, and techniques of drawing, underpainting, and glazing will be demonstrated. Levels: All Offered: 4 Wednesdays beginning Sept. 8, (No class Sept. 15). Come discover the versatility of the chalk pastel medium. We will cover the basics including choosing surfaces, mark making, color use, pastel brands and their qualities, underpainting techniques and composition. Participants will work on many small studies over the two day period both outdoors and in the studio in this very hands on workshop.Offered: September 11 & 12 Level All  Time: 9-3:30, please bring lunch Fee: $150 / $130-Members Instructor: Erika Perloff's a local landscape painter who has been working with pastels for over 10 years. Her work hangs in private and corporate collection and she is a regular participant in Open Studios, the Plein Air Affair and other regional shows. Carolyn Lord’s workshop will highlight her idiosyncratic approach to watercolor painting. Exercises to develop familiarity with watercolor’s possibilities will be presented such as; establishing the composition on the paper, color mixing and the use of transparent, granulating, and sedimentary paints, brush use, and the considerations of plein air painting. The class will be held indoors and weather permitting we will paint on and near the SCAL grounds. Offered: Nov. 13 & 14 Level Beginner plus/Interm. Time: 9-3:30, please bring lunch Fee: $150 / $130-Members Instructor: Carolyn Lord works in the California Regionalist Watercolor tradition established in the 1930's. She is Member of the California Art Club, and a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society. Carolyn served as a juror for the NWS's 89th Annual Exhibition. Awarded Best of Studio by Jean Stern at the Torrey Pines Plein Air Invitational, and Best of Show by Kevin MacPherson at the Santa Cruz Statewide Exhibition.

Offered: Nov. 20 & 21 Time: 9-3:30, please bring lunch Fee: $150 / $130-Members Instructor: Jody Alexander Jody Alexander is an artist, bookbinder, papermaker, librarian and teacher who lives and works inSanta Cruz, California. She makes paper, in the Eastern-style, and uses her papers to bind books with exposed sewing on the spine in a number of historical and modern binding styles. She combines these books with found objects, wooden boxes and drawers, metal, bones, etc. to create sculptural works. Her pieces celebrate collecting, storytelling, and odd characters. BA Art History, UCLA, MLS Libray Science, Simmon College, Boston, MA, studies in book arts at: North Bennett Street School in Boston, Museum School in Boston and Mass Art in Boston, and San Francisco Center for the book.
